Three-Quarters Pieces comprises three movements, all in three-four time signature, for a woodwind quintet. Each movement poses unique challenges for the ensemble. Movement I, titled “Minuet,” draws inspiration from the Baroque and Classical periods, featuring contrapuntal elements. It introduces beginner players to harmonic and melodic minor scales, with a key change to E♭ providing an additional challenge. Movement II, “Lullaby,” offers a contrasting sweet and tender atmosphere. The melody is initially played by the flute and later echoed by the clarinet and horn, accompanied by the remaining instruments. Movement III, “Waltz,” is the most technically demanding, characterized by stylistic chromaticism in each part. A key change keeps the material fresh, and careful attention to the repeat structure is required.
