Six years ago, inspired by my incredible high school band director, Chad Mielens, I wrote Inspiration, my first work for band. Today, with a blossoming career and a heart full of gratitude, I present Inspiration: Reinspired, a more musically mature expression of that initial spark.
Inspiration: Reinspired unfolds in a similar form to the original story. With a vibrant opening in the vibraphone, followed by “The Teacher’s” (trombone) guiding solo. Students join, building towards the soaring main theme (alto saxophones and horns). A playful call-and-response ensues, with “The Student” (timpani) mimicking “The Teacher.” Flourishing woodwinds interweave as the main theme returns, now triumphant in a march-like iteration. As “The Student” attempts to lead, the low winds announce the grand finale. Full ensemble joins in a powerful chorale of the main theme, ending with “The Student” leading the ensemble to a triumphant conclusion.
Inspiration: Reinspired is more than just a band piece; it’s a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and the cyclical nature of inspiration. It represents the incredible teacher-student relationship that I had with Mr. Mielens, and offers a message of appreciation, growth, and the enduring legacy of artistic influence.
